Energy hides behind different names: your electricity bill charges kilowatt-hours, food labels count calories, physics textbooks use joules. They all measure the same thing, and connecting them makes both your bills and your diet easier to reason about.
The joule: the base unit
The joule (J) is the SI unit of energy โ roughly the energy to lift a small apple one meter. It is tiny for everyday use, which is why bills and food labels use bigger units built on it.
Kilowatt-hours: what your bill counts
A kilowatt-hour is the energy of running a 1,000-watt appliance for one hour โ exactly 3.6 million joules. Examples: a modern fridge uses about 1 kWh per day; a full laundry cycle 1-2 kWh; an electric car needs 15-20 kWh per 100 km. Food calories vs physics calories
The "calorie" on food labels is actually a kilocalorie (kcal) โ 1,000 small calories, or 4,184 joules. A 2,000 kcal daily diet is about 8.4 megajoules, or 2.3 kWh โ remarkably, a human runs on less daily energy than many household appliances.
Putting it together
Some useful equivalences: 1 kWh = 860 kcal, so the energy in a day of food (~2,000 kcal) equals about 2.3 kWh of electricity โ worth under a euro at typical rates. Gas bills sometimes use BTU or therms: 1 therm โ 29.3 kWh. Converting everything to kWh is the easiest way to compare energy costs across electricity, gas and even food.
